In celebration of Brazil Independence Day in CT, The Brazilian Alliance in the US (BAUS) organized its 5th annual Brazilian Flag Raising at the CT State Capitol on 9/6. The ceremony was performed in both English and Portuguese by Margaret Sweet and Loy Ferguson, respectively. Members of the community welcomed CT Consulate Ambassador Ronaldo Dunlop, and his wife Regina Dunlop! They were both introduced to the community and public for the first time by Abigail Amorim. In her speech, Abigail said “This event today… shows ... the strength that our community has! It shows our strength as citizens and as a community in general.
Today’s event helps affirm our rights as immigrants to citizenship! Yes, we can!!! Today’s event is proof that the pioneer work of the Brazilian Alliance’s volunteers was not in vain. The letters requesting the New York Embassy to bring an Itinerant Consulate to Hartford back in 2003, resulted …in the opening of a Consulate General of Brazil in Hartford-CT “. The Alliance’s youth leaders, Lu Sousa and Raissa Lana, presented Regina with a bouquet of flowers, and director Abigail Amorim presented the Ambassador with a Leadership Citation written by CT State’s Treasurer, Denise Napier.
Ronaldo Dunlop was born in Rio de Janeiro, started his diplomatic career as a deputy consul in Berlin-Germany. He was designated to various embassies such as the Lisbon embassy, Luanda- Africa, Buenos Aires-Argentina, Saudi Arabia, England, and Beijing-China. In 2003, he became the ambassador of San Domingo Republic Dominican. In 2008 Ambassador Dunlop was appointed the head of the Hartford, CT Consulate. Ronaldo Dunlop announced that the Consulate is in the beginning of its setting up stages and will be opening before the end of this year. Vanda Marques and Jennifer Thampan read the state, and city proclamations written by Governor Jodi Rell and Mayor Perez respectively. Representatives Jorge Lima, from the Brazilian Catholic Community and Pastor Dantas Lima, from the Baptist Community, prayed that ABE, local, and world leaders kept their strength and commitment to serve their communities.

Allison Nicole Frank, 16 years old, singer, actress and ballroom dancer, from Trumbull, performed the US national Anthem. Ending the program, the Brazilian flag was raised Nicola Capellini from Hartford played his guitar, a version of the melody of the Brazilian anthem while the crowd sang the lyrics, during which green and yellow balloons, representing the Brazilian flag colors flew over the capitol. At that moment emotions were running very high! Everyone was proud! The Brazilian flag will fly over the Capitol for a week. The civic ceremony was followed by a small brunch reception during which ambassador Dunlop, and guests were interviewed by the local Latino Media, PostlatinoNews and Telemundo. The friendly game of soccer between the BraziLegal and Casa Benfica took place at the Dillon Stadium after the ceremony. The game ended regular time 0X0 and BraziLegal won 4x0 on penalty kicks.
